LAURENCE WASSER

Laurence Wasser’s practice revolves around two main axes, one taking the form of video- and photo-based installations (often in collaboration with Jade Smith), the other combining performance and music. Combining social critique and a contemplative relationship with the world, he seeks to question our relationship with reality through the production of “ghost-objects” often based on a principle of tautology, and performances based on repetitive chanting and glossolalia. A particular sensitivity to places and landscapes has also led him to develop a practice of wandering and drifting, which he transcribes into photos and videos.

Laurence intends to take advantage of his residency at SOMA to launch a new cycle of work, at once an intimate interrogation and a questioning of our role in the current political situation. In keeping with SOMA’s role as a public space, he has invited a number of friends to put forward proposals, giving rise to the idea of making SOMA a kind of ephemeral cabaret, a space for dialogue and an attempt to reinvest the political field through artistic practices, or to repoliticize them, as the case may be.
